The Harrow Collection was designed with Victorian- era style in mind, so it’s got a touch of the costume feeling about it. It’s what I might knit and wear in a drafty old house while reading Whuthering Heights in front of a sputtering fire.

Years ago I accepted a dare to create a knitting pattern of the Dude’s sweater in the movie, The Big Lebowski. The Dude has been one of my most popular patterns, and I’ve designed a lot of things since then, but I’ve always wanted to revisit that concept. I’ve been plotting a Dude-inspired sweater that could fit anyone and would be a joy to knit, and I’ve finally accomplished my goal with The Royal We: Dude Patterns for Everyone.

eBook : 7 patterns

When I first began designing this collection, I had a vision: classy, interesting knits that men would want to wear as well as knit. Having lived in both the city and the country, I have found inspiration in both the practical casualness of the urban Northwest lifestyle, as well as the earthy outdoorsiness of the country. Both places meet in this collection, which melds simplicity, masculinity, and style.

Here in Victoria, BC, we have rocky hillsides that are blanketed in verdant moss and ferns wherever there are shady spots, and adorned with pebbly stonecrop in the sunshine. Those sunny havens are where little snakes love to spread out and warm up. Snakes in the Stonecrop cowl is a joyful meditation on the small plants and critters that share o...

Being outside at all times of year is a must for me and lately I’ve found myself grabbing those sweaters that are just a tiny bit slouchy, that fit easily over my button-up shirts, and offer that extra bit of coziness. And I’ve been craving a sweater that’s both basic and extravagant, one that will feel like a neutral while still satisfying my ...

Here on the west coast of Canada, the wind can pick up and the waves crash hard on rocky shorelines. In parts of Vancouver Island, “storm watching” is advertised as a tourist activity to encourage folks to come here in the winter and it’s not just a gimmick! Storm season is a breathtaking time of year for contemplating the energy and beauty of ...

The giant Pacific octopus is a creature with an incredible ability to camouflage, changing the colour and texture of their skin at will. This sock pattern is meant to invoke that changeable, underwater glory. I see suckers fading into the surroundings of bull kelp and seawater, though it can’t quite be pinned down.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
The Moon Jelly Hat is an homage to the diaphanous animals that seem like aliens floating through the ocean. Worked with a long, ribbed brim, it’s a cozy, comforting knit with just the tiniest bit of colourwork at the top of the crown.

I find joy in paying attention to small things in nature. I’m one of those hikers who appreciates “botany pace” in which everyone present is constantly pausing to say, “Look at this!” I’ll stop mid-stride to hear that bird call again. I’ll stoop down low to see the underside of a weird fungus. And I can hardly bear to just walk by a flower with...
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
A Checklist of Birds is a very pleasing catalog that lists the birds that are present in a particular region and when they’re around. This pattern takes that concept and puts it into sock form! Now you’ll always remember that Northern Flickers are common all year round in Victoria but that you’re much more likely to see Goldfinches and Rufous H...

I designed this toque as a fun addition to my Dissent series, patterns inspired by American Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I thought it would be great to have a hat pattern that could be used as a swatch for either the worsted or fingering weight sweater. I’ll admit that I had no plan, no thought, of Ruth Bader Ginsburg dying before...

The Botanical Sampler is a lace cowl that explores some classic motifs to give a fun, rewarding project. Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
Spring wildflowers in Victoria make it one of my favourite times to be outside. This sock design reminds me of blooms like camas, calypso orchids, and seablush in a sea of green grasses against a warm blue sky. Enjoy a springtime meadow right on your needles and wear it on your feet all year long.
Knitting: Pullover
If you know me, you’ll already know that I’m inspired by American Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. This fingering weight pullover comes with several versions to mix ...

Knitting: Cardigan
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is known for her dissenting opinions. When she reads a dissent, she often wears a particular collar, or “jabot.” It’s a striking visual adornment and as soon as I saw it, I knew I wanted to design a yoke sweater inspired by it. This sweater, Dissent, is my tribute to RBG. May we all channel her whe...
