Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
An introduction to some techniques for members of my regular classes originally.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
This hat uses approx 70g of one colour or two colours roughly 40g and 30g of DK weight yarn.
Crochet: Market bag (slouchy)
This is a simple crocheted shopping bag. It has an open stretchy net construction and holds a good amount. It can be made from cotton or from string if you wish. I’ve used the prototype for two years now and have had to make for both my adult children because it fits in a pocket when empty and it perfect for daily essentials shopping.
Knitting: Pullover
This is a lace and beaded yoke Christmas sweater designed for the Ch4 TV Show Kirstie’s Hand made Christmas 2020 in which i was a contestant. The compeition was judged by knitwear designer and tutor Erica Knight who declared the jumper a super piece of design and a truly christmas jumper before naming me as me the winner. Since then I have had ...
Knitting: Ankle Sock, Mid-calf Socks
These are toe up socks with a German Short Row Heel. The pattern is a slip stitch textured pattern over a four row repeat making it easy to adjust the foot length to suit whatever you need. I based the pattern on a single 100g skein of fingering yarn length approx 400m.
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
These socks are the result of a collaboration between KalokShekEllen of Mrs Lam Yarns and I. She was inspired to create something special for Chinese New Year and asked me to help create the pattern and charts. Ellen has kindly provided the linguistic guidance on the characters and style chosen. (Plus test knitting.) Personally I’m a year of th...
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
While on holiday on Rhodes I had thought I might use some bamboo and wool blend that I had in stash. I had started a prototype for a crescent shawl just before leaving Scotland and decided to try the bamboo for that. It got redesigned as I saw the pattern and shape evolve. Helios Wing is the result.
Crochet: Fingerless Gloves
This is a simple fingerless mitt pattern using three Tunisian crochet stitches, the ability to work a simple increase and a simple decrease.
Crochet: Beanie, Toque
This is a simple english notation beanie using double crochet and back post trebles. can be striped or plain and is reversible.
Knitting: Scarf
Earlier this year I was chatting to my young friend Amy. Amy is a talented pastry chef with a love of all things chocolate who works at Mirrie Dancers Chocolatier in Shetland. She kindly offered me a room to let me attend Shetland wool week and over a lunch at her parents the idea of a chocolate inspired knitting project was born. The
Knitting: Cowl
When the concept of the I-cord loop pattern occurred to me I knew that I wanted to create a range of products that used the idea. I explored rainbow coloured patterns in the shawl and the socks. I decided that the cowl needed to use a single coloured contrast and have a theme that related to the colours I chose. The range of blues in the contra...
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
This sock is inspired by a young friend who has come out to her family and friends. I was working on my Loop the Loop Shawl when I found out and thinking about my gay and trans friends I realised that the braids and loops could represent the barriers still present in society for them and the hoops, both emotional and societal, that my friends j...
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
This is an asymmetrical triangular shawl which uses a combination of textures and Latvian Braids as decoration until you add the I-cord Loop highlights in 10 colours. This is a fun knit which both of my test knitters and myself have enjoyed. Have fun with it.
Knitting: Ankle Sock
This pattern was developed for my niece when she was getting close to delivering her daughter last summer. The idea of them having matching socks to come home from the hospital seemed right.
Knitting: Bag - Other
The bag is designed to use scrap yarns. to get the approximate weight of yarn you should use chunky or Aran yarn. Two strands of DK or three strands of 4ply/fingering weight yarn obtain the same results.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
Living beside the Pentland Firth and seeing its range of colours textures and the immense power that typifies this amazing stretch of water is awe inspiring and I felt that this had to be the inspiration for a shawl.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
The Hooded Bat was inspired by my daughter complaining that she could easily forget her hat in cold winter Caithness if she was in a hurry. I realised that adding a hood to a cowl, shawl or scarf would solve the problem. I wanted something textured so blocks of broken rib and stocking stitch seemed appropriate.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
This is a texture and lace pattern inspired by Art Nouveau stained glass windows. I takes two of the most common floral morifs the tulip and the rose and replaces the lead with strings of lace holes and textured panels to show the leaf and petal shapes.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
Feeling the urge to create a shawl during the journey from Caithness to Edinburgh in the spring of 2017, I decided to explore textures of knit, purl and simple lace stitches, playfully weaving them to a central panel which can be as bold as the knitter desires. So the idea of his shawl was born…
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
The pattern can be modified to create any foot length. Width adjustments are possible but need to be mirrored in the front and back of the sock.
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
This sock pattern was created for fun for a friend’s baby and has since been asked for on several occasions. I’ve written a copy of the pattern I used and have filmed a You tube tutorial of me producing one sock. The video length is about 55 to 60 minutes and covers the entire process, primarily in real time.
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
I have not specified a tension/gauge for this sock pattern because sock knitters all have a favourite needle size and cast on stitch Count that suits. They also adjust through foot length and leg length to suit their personal preferences. This makes my personal gauge irrelevant because you should add or omit pattern repeats as you need to get t...
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
This is a scarf/shawl pattern in the form of a sailor’s collar. It can be worn in a variety of ways.
Knitting: Ankle Sock
This was a pattern put together for the younger members of the family who preferred short socks for both slouching at home or a quick slip into a shoe.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
This Aran weight project was inspired by shapes and the uneven texture of a forest floor. It includes motifs that resemble leaves, mushrooms, twisted roots and water.
