1884 Canework Afghan Strip
From 1884 The Young Ladies’ Journal, p. 58, No. 8, this pattern imitates the woven cane panels on Victorian summer chairs. There are just 4 pattern rows with the 2 wrong-side rows mostly purl. This afghan strip can be adjusted to any width by adding or subtracting multiples of 6 stitches.
The sample is 4.25 inches wide with 5 6-stitch repeats and 2 border stitches on each side.
Skills needed: cast on, slip purl-wise, knit, purl, yarn over, SK2P (slip1, k2tog, PSSO) and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able thread/yarn will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.
8 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make about 1 inch of a 34-stitch-wide strip in stated gauge.
