She lifted her head in surprise, following his line of sight above the tree line. Beyond the distant peaks, a green and blue
symphony of lights had begun. It rippled and shimmered like sunshine on water… “It’s the aurora borealis,” Lou said quietly. “Northern lights.”

When I was young, we didn’t have online search engines to aid us when conducting research for school. My parents collected the Encyclopedia in hard cover, with the annual updates that came out each year, designed to give you everything you needed to know in a condensed book collection. One year, when studying the provinces and territories of Canada, I was assigned the Northwest Territories, where we had to journal the adventures of a traveller exploring the territories for the first time. When I pulled the encyclopedia off the shelf and turned to the Northwest Territories section, I was in awe by the beautiful photo of the northern lights that graced the page. My father, an avid photographer and passionate collector of National Geographic, had a whole collection of magazines where the photos of the Aurora Borealis graced the horizon, filling the sky with beautiful colours that had to be seen to be believed. Many years later, while on one of my first excursions for my career to Utikuma Alberta, I remember sitting outside enjoying the night air with my colleagues, when suddenly the sky filled with beautiful green/blue rays of light. The days are long in northern Alberta, and the sky held a grey tinge as a canvas. That was my first time experiencing the northern lights outside of a book and the moment I knew my journey had truly begun. The Aurora Horizon Cardigan, commemorates that night, as a cozy cardigan to cuddle into while sitting back and enjoying the rays of blue/green, filling the sky.
