The basket weave dishcloth is a simple, useful project and a genuinely good place to learn.

The whole cloth is built from knit and purl stitches arranged in blocks, so it teaches you to read your knitting and create texture with no complicated shaping.

Having taught beginner knitting through my local Parks and Recreation program, I have watched this exact kind of project turn nervous first timers into confident knitters. A dishcloth is small, it works up fast, and a mistake costs you a few rows rather than a whole sweater, which makes it the ideal place to practice.
