Isabella Beeton’s 1870 pattern instructions were garbled, so this is what I think she intended. This pattern was meant to be the accent for “Beeton’s Shawl Ground” (my name for it) that covered most of Beeton’s triangular shawl. There are 4 rows with a multiple of 5 stitches + 1 edge stitch + 1 selvage stitch. The larger swatch is knitted with Bernat’s Softee yarn on U.S. #6 needles.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, double yarn over, k2tog, SSK and bind off.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
