Named for the spikes found on black hawthorn trees, this hat features an interesting combination of standard stranded colorwork and colorwork dip stitches, creating subtly textured columns. Once mastered, this stitch pattern is addictive to knit and goes by quite quickly!

Sizing / Finished Measurements

Instructions are included for both long folded brim and a short brim, and for 3 adult sizes.

Circumference: approximately 19”, (21”, 22.5”) /(48 cm(52 cm,56.5 cm))

Length: approximately 11.25” (11.5”, 11.75”) for the long brim version (brim unfolded) or 9.75” (10”, 10.25”) for the short brim version

Yarn / Yardage

The purple sample was knit in Swans Island All American Sport in the colorway Blackberry, and Spincycle Dyed in the Wool in the colorway Pick Your Poison.

The blue sample was knit in Kelbourne Woolens Andorra in the colorway French Blue, and Spincycle Dyed in the Wool in the colorway Ghost Ranch.

While the originals combine solid and color shifting yarn, many other sport weight yarns can be used. Wool or wool-like yarns are recommended for a result similar to the samples.

Main color: 220 (235, 250) yards( 200 (214, 229) meters) for the long brim version, or 130 (145, 160) yards ( 119 (133, 146) meters) for the short brim version

Contrast color: 105 (120, 150) yards ( 96 (110, 137) meters)

Needles

US 4 (3.5 mm) for the brim and US 5 (3.75mm) for the body. Either a 40” (100 cm) circular for magic loop or a 16” (40 cm) circular combined with DPNS will work for this project.
