Bomen
These cosy mittens are designed as a twinned pair – in that the left and right hand clearly go together, but they each have a different tree on them – to start hinting at the beautiful and essential diversity of forests. Bomen means trees in Dutch, but also chatting.
Worked in the round, from the cuffs up, starting with a corrugated rib. There is a thumb gusset for increased comfort and movement. They use marlisle, a technique where sections are worked using both yarns held together to form a marl, interspersed with sections (the trees and cuffs) that are worked as standard stranded colourwork (each yarn used separately). In this way, the majority is worked in garter stitch, using both yarns held together, while the ‘trees’ are worked in standard stranded colourwork from a chart that is different for left and right mitten. There is an supplementary chart that shows each mitten charted fully, for those who like to work that way, and so that you can change right and left hands or adapt the fit more easily.
Perfect for a little knitting adventure and then a walk in the wintery woods.
