Butterick's Airy Ripple
This pattern is from 1892 Butterick’s The Art of Knitting, p.120. It was intended for a child’s under-dress skirt. (Victorian boys wore dresses until they were 5 to 7 years old.) I thought this pattern would make a great afghan strip or scarf. There are 10 pattern rows and a multiple of 11 stitches + 2 selvage stitches. There’s only 1 “fancy” row that’s worked 4 times; the other rows are knit across or purl across except for the selvage stitches.
Strip pictured is 5 inches wide.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, k2tog tbl and bind off in knit stitch.
Optional: substituting SSK for k2tog tbl, if preferred.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
58 yards of Universal Yarn’s Bamboo Pop yarn will make 10 inches of a 35-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
