I first designed this hat as a present for a wonderful friend of mine. She’s been there for me a lot since the day we met. However the name of this pattern, ‘dreich’ does not correctly describe our friendship. Dreich is one of my favourite Scottish words to describe the weather, roughly translated it means ‘miserable weather’.

The day this pattern was finalised I looked up out of the window with a swell of pride, only to see that the weather was dreich. That was when I remembered this wonderful word and while the weather wasn’t great, the hat and design brightened my day. So every time I see that the weather is grey, the meaning of Dreich means a bit more.

This hat is made in the round using circular needles, but is easily transferable on to DPNs. It’s a quick and fun knit. One that is cosy to make and cosy to wear!
