This is not a pattern for beginners. It is designed for intermediate or advanced level knitters.

This is an ornate lace shawl suggesting the swirling flames of a bonfire. It is heavily beaded, though the pattern is not carried in the beads. Use 8/0 beads for laceweight yarn, and 6/0 beads for fingering weight yarn. Use a US 3 needle for the lace weight, or a US 5 needle for fingering weight, adjusting needle size to suit your taste and knitting style.

Instructions are given for gradiance style yarns, such as those by The Unique Sheep.

For the large circle, use 1730 yards (1582 meters) of laceweight or 2012 yards (1840 meters) of fingering weight yarn, and 5634 beads. The lace weight shawl will be about 55” (140 cm) in diameter, and the fingering weight version will be about 73” (186 cm).

For the small circle, use 1181 yards (1080 meters) of laceweight or 1374yards (1256 meters) of fingering weight yarn, and 3882 beads. The lace weight shawl will be about 45” (115 cm) in diameter, and the fingering weight version will be about 60” (154 cm).

For the large two thirds circle, use 1245 yards (1139 meters) of laceweight or 1448 yards (1324 meters) of fingering weight yarn, and 3776 beads. The lace weight shawl will be about 29” (72 cm) in depth, and the fingering weight version will be about 38” (96 cm).

For the small two thirds circle, use 865 yards (791 meters) of laceweight or 1006 yards (920 meters) of fingering weight yarn, and 2800 beads. The lace weight shawl will be about 24” (60 cm) in diameter, and the fingering weight version will be about 31” (79 cm).

Errata:In the smaller gradiance tables, the headings 6 part, 5 part, and 4 part should be changed to 6 skein, 5 skein, and 4 skein.

In the “I want to get creative” section, below the 2 large gradiance transition tables, the first paragraph contains the instructions for working a gradiance transition. This should be moved into the “How do I …” section, along with an appropriate heading. Also, these instructions should be changed to note that knitting 2 strands together for a single stitch to avoid floats may leave visible artifacts in plain knit areas. To avoid this, you can just twist the two strands around each other on the wrong side and continue knitting.
