Fitton’s Dynamo

This versatile throw-over, featuring grown-on sleeves and an optional bolt of electricity, is inspired by ingenious and energetic Amanda Fitton, who supports her household with water-powered energy—and (in later Allingham novels) also knits.

Kate Davies Designs Milarrochy Tweed (70% Wool; 30% Mohair; 100m / 109yds per 25g ball)
Thrift: 10 (15, 19, 22) x 25g balls
Yarn is held doubled throughout.

Needles and notions
Gauge-size and below gauge-size circular needles (of your preferred length and type)
Tapestry needle
Stitch markers (of locking type, or bulb pins)
Spare needle cords or waste yarn for holding stitches

Gauge
20 sts and 40 rows (20 ridges) to 10cm / 4in, over garter stitch, worked back and forth, on gauge-size needle(s) with yarn held double.
Use 4mm needle as a starting point for swatching.
To swatch: with yarn held double, cast on 30 sts and knit back and forth in garter stitch for 60 rows. Bind off loosely, block and measure.

Garment proportions and ease
This garment is shaped to create a loose, contemporary silhouette that looks great on many different body shapes and works well as an extra layer over many different summer outfits. Check the sizing table for garment dimensions and choose the cast-on size above your actual measurements, with the amount of ease preferred. The length proportions of the first size are more cropped than other sizes: if you’d like to lengthen the garment, you may wish to work more rib rows at the garment hem.

Pattern notes
This simple layering garment is worked back and forth, in two pieces. After the ribbed hem is finished, the body is worked following a garter stitch and cable panel pattern. The armscyes are shaped with increases, and the shoulders are then shaped with short rows, to create an easy, dolman silhouette with grown-on sleeve caps. Using a bind off that combines the familiar three needle technique with i-cord, the shoulders are joined, and a neat corded edge is worked all along the side seams and around the armscyes. The neck is completed with 2x2 rib, which flows out from the cable panel. Note that the panel chart is read from right to left on RS rows and left to right on WS rows and that when one number is given it applies to all sizes.
