Fleckit Gravit
Fläckig means ‘speckled, spotted’ in Swedish and descends from the Old Norse flekkr- ‘spot’. The Shaetlan cognate is fleckit, which strictly speaking means ‘spotted with dark spots on a white background’, which is the reverse of this scarf. This poetic license is a play on the long shared history of Shetland and Scandinavia.
The scarf is a celebration of the garter stitch and combines both dyed and undyed yarn. It is reversible, with one speckled side and one side featuring a more woven style texture, due to the technique of what I am calling a “latticed slip garter” stitch. The effect of the “latticed slip garter” reminds me of my various cultures as a mixed heritage Swedish/Sri Lankan living in Shetland: the lattice pattern gives a nod to the South Asian traditional stone lattice ornamentation, while the effect of the slip stitch colour alternations has a Fair Isle as well as Bohus feel to it, without actually being stranded knitting. An extra bonus is that you’ll have no loose ends to weave in.
The pattern is for jumper weight yarn, but can also be applied to double knit, though this will affect the size and dimensions of the waistcoat.
