Free To Be Me
♫ The Music ♫
Free to Be You and Me by The New Seekers was the title track of a 1974 television special of the same name. It was an innovative program designed to teach children to ‘express themselves and be independent’.
“You and me are free to be, you and me”
Details
- Toe-up socks beginning with a slipper toe.
- 2AAT (2-at-a-time) knitters: the beginning of round marker is moved when the toe shaping is finished. It may be easier to work the toes separately and then set up for 2AAT knitting.
- Pattern Stitch is worked on the instep while the sole is worked in Stockinette stitch.
- Short-row (Fleegle) heel.
- Both the front and back leg are worked in the lace and bud pattern stitch.
Stitch pattern is charted with written directions provided.
About the Colours:
It’s all about your leftover stash! The pattern shows 4 complementary colours but you can choose any number of colours and change them more often or less often than the pattern dictates, or work each colour until it runs out – the possibilities are endless! No amount of leftover yarn is too small to incorporate into this pattern.
Some ideas:
• Work the stripes as shown – changed every 8 rounds after the toe;
• Choose colours that create a gradient look;
• Try colour-blocking: work any one colour until you run out and then change to the next colour;
• Change colours every 2 or 4 rounds instead of the every 8;
• Create your own ‘magic ball’ by tying all your leftover bits and bobs together and letting the colours fall where they may;
• Go wild and try a different technique on each sock!
Directions are included on how to change colours for the sample shown. You may carry colours not in use up the inside of the sock or cut each colour as a new one is joined; the latter option, though, will leave a lot of ends to weave in.
