Frostline Hat
Use the code FROSTY for 30% off through Feb. 1st! OR, if you add 4 of my designs to your cart, the least expensive one will be free (no coupon necessary) ~ happy knitting!
The Frostline Hat is a DK-weight beanie with a frosty slip-stitch pattern dancing around the brim. The colorwork is very easy to knit, using only one color per round. Inside, there’s a ribbed brim lining that is joined seamlessly as you go, giving you extra warmth and a soft, stretchy brim edge. The rest of the hat is worked in stockinette stitch, so you can knit to your desired height.
The hardest part of this hat is choosing which colors to combine! Variegated and gradient yarns can create beautiful effects in the slip-stitch section. And since you don’t need a lot of either color, Frostline is perfect for using up precious leftovers.
Instructions are fully written, with an optional chart.
A link to a video tutorial for the provisional cast on is included.
Sizes & Blocked Measurements
Sizes: Youth (Adult Small, Adult Large)
Height (measured flat): 7.5 (8, 8.75)”/18.75 (20.5, 22) cm
Brim circumference: 15.75 (18, 20.25)”/40 (45, 51.5) cm
The brim circumference should measure 2-3”/5-7.5 cm smaller than the wearer’s head circumference.
Blocked Gauge
20 Stitches and 28 rounds = 4”/10 cm square in stockinette stitch on US 6/4 mm needle.
Yarn
- Approximately 85 (90, 110) yd/78 (83, 101) m DK-weight yarn in Color A; shown in a Miss Babs Yowza Mini in the Blueberry colorway (200 yd/182 m per 2.8 oz/80 g skein), AND
- Approximately 95 (110, 130) yd/87 (101, 119) m DK-weight yarn in Color B; shown in a Miss Babs Yowza Mini in the Naked colorway (200 yd/182 m per 2.8 oz/80 g skein).
The slip-stitch pattern is clearest when there is plenty of contrast between the two colors. To see how much the yarns contrast, try taking a black and white photo of them.
For the effect shown here, use the lighter color as Color B.
Needles
- US 4/3.5 mm circular needle, 16”/40 cm long, or two sizes smaller than size needed to obtain gauge (for brim lining only)
- US 6/4 mm circular needle, 16”/40 cm long, or size to obtain gauge
- US 6/4 mm double-pointed needles or preferred method for knitting small circumferences in the round, or size to obtain gauge
Notions
- Crochet hook and smooth scrap yarn for provisional cast on
- 1 stitch marker
- 1 removable marker
- 2 point protectors
