Hypotemuse
This shawl was inspired by making a stitch pattern with slipped stitches that would look great on both right side and wrong side. Isn’t it quite nice when shawls are reversible? Worked in a fab blend of llama and silk fibres, the drape and the feel of the shawl is truly great. The stitch pattern is easy to remember – exactly what you’re looking for in a social knitting. This pattern was originally made for the first Stockholm Yarn Fest in 2020 – which was postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic.
Although I wasn’t quite expecting to be faced with such mathematical issues when calculating the shawl: I knew I wanted a triangle with a right angle but where the sides (catheti) are unequal in length and I knew only the length of the hypotenuse and the desired depth of the shawl. Let’s just leave it at this: I never took that advanced math and I called for help.
The source of the name for the shawl is a mix of the words hypotenuse and muse. The one thing I had to begin with for this shawl was a vision for the shape based on the hypotenuse – and a stitch pattern. As you cast off sts in the beginning of the right side and the end of the wrong side you can see the hypotenuse take shape. A muse is a person who is a source of artistic inspiration and very fitting since I believe all knitters are muses – sources of inspiration to ourselves and others.
Note on gauge: The shawl will stretch in blocking so your gauge before blocking will be different.
This pattern has been tech edited and testknitted.
