This shawl was designed in collaboration with Ellen from Mrs Lam Yarns.

The yarn and shawl are both inspired by the Mid-Autumn festival celebrated in Chinese and other east Asian cultures. The shawl specifically references the tradition of walking with lit lanterns at night and the use of lotus as an ingredient in the moon cakes that are made for the festival.

It is made up of a central cable panel inspired by lanterns, alongside eyelets to represent sparkling lights in the night sky. The bottom section of the shawl features a beautiful lace motif in the shape of a lotus flower to bring the moon cakes into the design. It is finished with an elegant and pretty looped edging.

PATTERN INFORMATION

YARN
Yarn A: 1 skein Mrs Lam Yarns Sock, 75% Superwash Merino / 25% Nylon). 425 metres (465 yds) / 100 grams in Lantern Lights.
Yarn B: 1 skein Mrs Lam Yarns Sock, 75% Superwash Merino / 25% Nylon). 425 metres (465 yds) / 100 grams in Rose.

Amount of yarn A used: 340m (372 yards)
Amount of Yarn B used: 323m (353 yards)

Good substitutions would include any yarn of a similar weight.

NEEDLES
4 mm (US size 6) 100 cm (40 in) circular needle for working flat or size needed to obtain gauge.

GAUGE
13 stitches and 33 rows to 10 cm / 4 in worked in staggered eyelet stitch on 4 mm (US size 6) needle after blocking.

Gauge is not crucial to this project, but varying gauges will affect fabric, yardage and final measurements.
