Caution: EXTREME curves! Lombard Street in San Francisco has 8 hairpin turns. This strip can have as many hairpin turns as you need. These turns create a much thicker column than the 2 side columns.
This strip has 36 stitches and 6 pattern rows. Rows 2 and 5 have short rows and a 14-stitch cable.
The original Weldon’s ca. 1897 pattern keeps the 2 edge stitches in garter stitch but you can change them to whatever is easiest for sewing strips together, if preferred. FYI: the 14-stitch cable is attached to the main piece by the corners only, creating a tunnel. I recommend working a deep border of some kind after cast-on and before bind-off due to the distortion the wide cable makes.
The swatch is 5.75 inches wide blocked to gauge.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, short rows, k2tog, SSK, p2tog tbl (see note) and bind off.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

88 yards of Wool Ease Worsted yarn will make 10 inches of this strip at gauge.
