The original pattern is from 1892 Butterick Publishing’s The Art of Knitting, p. 13, no. 12. I corrected some significant errors, changed the pattern to knit flat and added edge stitches. Dropped yarn overs make the moth bodies. All 8 pattern rows are “fancy” rows.
The 46-stitch sample is 5 inches wide with 3 14-stitch repeats and 4 edge stitches (2 on each side).

Skills needed: long-tail cast on, slip, knit, purl, yarn over, k2tog, SSK, p2tog, p2tog through back loop (check out Barbara Walker’s easy method in the instructions) and bind off in 1x1 rib stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able thread/yarn will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.

80 yards of #10 crochet thread will make about 10 inches of a 46-stitch-wide strip in the stated gauge.
