Nightdress Case Stripe
This pattern was easy and pleasant to work! I’m very pleased to finally show you this one!
This 1889 Weldon pattern was intended for a nightdress case. After knitting the main piece, an edging similar or identical to my “Tansy Border” on Ravelry was sewn onto the case’s 4 edges. The nightdress case was then lined with sateen fabric.
A nightdress/nightgown case was a common item for Victorian and Edwardian women. Their night clothes were neatly folded and placed in the case. The case was kept on the bed under a lady’s pillow. You can use this pattern for any item you choose, though.
There are 14 pattern rows to Nightdress Case Stripe: the 7 right-side rows are “fancy” rows, the 7 wrong-side rows are identical and are just knit and purl stitches. There’s a multiple of 13 stitches + 3 edge stitches. I altered the pattern to balance the purl stitches on the edges and corrected 2 errors in the original instructions.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, YO, SSK, k2tog and bind off.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
48 yards of Bernat Softee Baby Cotton yarn will make 10 inches of a 29-stitch swatch at gauge.
