The main features in this pattern are the front and back cables, which are made by threading i-cord through eyelet openings in the body of the cardigan. These i-cords are knitted separately and threaded after the whole sweater is finished and blocked.
The construction of this cardigan starts at the shoulders, with cabled bands that begin at the back neck and flow all the way down to the sleeves. Later, you work the back and the fronts down to the underarm, where you join the body in one piece. The sleeves are picked up around the armholes and worked in the round.
This whole pattern is worked seamlessly.

MATERIALS
Yarn: MC: 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7) skeins of Merino Aran by La Bien Aimée (100% Merino - 100g / 181y 166m), or approx. 597 (651, 724, 778, 832, 905, 959, 1049, 1176, 1267) yards 547 (597, 664, 713, 763, 830, 879, 962, 1079, 1162) m of aran weight yarn. Shown in colorway Dusk.
CC for the i-cords: 1 skein of Merino DK by La Bien Aimée (100% Merino - 100g / 252y 230m), or approx. 163 yards 150 m of DK weight yarn (or any other weight, actually! Read the note below). Shown in colorway Dusk.

I used a different base for the i-cords of my cardigan, simply because I didn’t have any more of my main yarn. I think that the DK weight worked great, but I am sure that I could have also used the same yarn as my main sweater, or a completely different one: different fiber, different color, material. Some knitters will surely prefer to use ribbons, or even leather cords.

Needles: US 9 5.5 mm and US 7 4.5 mm circular needles, 32” 80 cm long. You will need a second needle in the smaller size if you plan to do a tubular bind off.
Other notions: Cable needle, stitch holders, stitch markers, tapestry needle.

GAUGE
14 sts and 20 rows to 4” 10cm in Broken Rib with US 9 5.5 mm needles, after blocking.
Broken Rib (for swatching purposes): Knit all sts on RS rows, k1/p1 on WS rows.
