This pattern was for a fold-up cuff on a child’s toque (stocking hat) in 1912 Fleischer’s Knitting and Crocheting Manual, p.184. It looked like the tread pattern in steel plate, so I added 4 rows of background to enhance that look. This pattern has a 10-stitch repeat + 5 extra stitches and a 16-row repeat. Add selvage stitches, if desired.
The swatch is 45 stitches wide and 3 repeats tall.

Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Almost any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

83 yards of Cascade Yarn’s ReFine will make 10 inches of a 45-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
