Vagaland mitts
Knit the Shetland way! The fair isle motif on the back of the hand is a particular favourite of mine as my grandmother Jemima used it countless times (picture of her taken in the 1970’s to the left). My one remaining pair of gloves made by her has this motif on them. The construction of these mitts are made in the same style so the techniques used go back for generations of Shetland knitters. These techniques include a thumb gusset and a folded, patterned cuff so may prove to be a little challenging to a new knitter. The folded cuff maintains pattern and design on the outside but also the benefits of snug ribbing on the inside giving a comfortable and double layer of warmth around the wrist. The Vagaland mitts are designed to be knitted on their own or to create a matching set with the Vagaland beret. As with all my patterns please pay particular attention to the required tension.
