This design complements Stitch Play # 3, and I played with three sizes of boxes as I knit these cowls. I made two versions, but I’ve mapped out other options, as well, in the instructions. I used a worsted weight yarn, knit to a gauge of 18.5 sts x 30 rows = 10 cm 4” and ended up with projects that measured 64.75 cm in circumference and 25.5 cm tall 26” x 10. A DK weight yarn, knit to a gauge of 22 sts x 32 rows = 10 cm 4” would result in a cowl measuring 54.5 cm x 23.5 cm 21.75” x 9.25”; sport-weight yarn, knit to a gauge of 24 sts x 34 rows = 10 cm 4” would result in a cowl measuring 50 cm x 22 cm 20” x 8.75”. This might be a good project for using up leftovers you find in your stash!

The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:

  • cast on and bind off;
  • knit and purl;
  • working in the round.

Varney is all about motorsports. Known best for Friday night stock-car races, Varney is also on the OFSC District 9 snowmobile trail, and there’s a motorcycle shop nearby.
