Wayfinder Scarf is a stash project designed around color and simple knitting. Minis, leftovers, handspun, advent sets, single skeins; they all find a place here, coming together in a bold chevron scarf with soft drape and a graphic look.
Knit in modular garter stitch blocks, you join as you go so the scarf comes off the needles finished. Add a new color whenever you feel like it and watch the pattern slowly take shape. It’s an easy project to carry around and easy to return to, one block at a time.
Design Details
Wayfinder is worked entirely in garter stitch, creating a squishy fabric that shows off every color. The chevron effect comes from simple shaping within each block, and the modular construction keeps the knitting engaging and easy.
There’s no purling, seaming or finishing work at the end. Each block is joined as it’s made, so the scarf grows continuously across the width. Optional pompoms can be added for a playful finish.
Length and width are easy to adjust by working more or fewer blocks or stripes.
Pattern Highlights
- Modular garter stitch blocks joined as you knit
- Great for minis, leftovers, and single skeins
- Easy to customize length and width
- Portable knitting you can pick up anytime
Construction Overview
Wayfinder Scarf is worked in modular garter stitch blocks. Each block is knit and joined directly to the previous section by picking up stitches, so no sewing is required.
The chevron pattern forms through simple increases and decreases within each block. Stripes are built by repeating blocks across the width, then continuing lengthwise until the scarf reaches your desired size.
Optional pompoms can be added after blocking.
Yarn Notes
We knit our samples in fingering weight yarn, using a mix of minis, leftovers, and hand dyed skeins. Wayfinder works especially well with yarn you already have, because each block only uses a small amount.
Sample yarn: PRU Singles Fingering
100% Merino
400 yds (366 m) per 100 g
Each block uses approximately 2.75–3 g (about 11–12 yds with a 400 yd/100 g yarn), making it ideal for advent calendars and scrap baskets. You can keep the palette cohesive or let every block be different.

Needles & Gauge
US 4 (3.50 mm) 16” circular or straight needles
Gauge is not critical for this project. We like the drape achieved on US 4 needles. If you knit very loosely, consider going down a size to stay within yardage.
Yarn Requirements
Fingering weight yarn
Approximate total used (scarf only): 400 g
Per block: 2.75–3 g (approx. 11–12 yds with 400 yd/100 g yarn)
Optional pompoms: ~20 g per 3” (7.5 cm) pompom
Finished Measurements
Sample size:
Length: 100” / 254 cm
Width: 13” / 33 cm
Shown with 4 stripes and 34 blocks in each stripe.
Length and width are easily modified by adding or removing blocks and stripes (yardage will vary).
