Weldon's Battenberg
This Victorian pattern is from ca. 1894 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 7, pp.11 and 13. It was originally used for a newborn’s winter hood.
There are 4 pattern rows with a multiple of 3 stitches + 4 extra stitches (2 stitches needed for the pattern and 2 selvage stitches). The stitch count per row will vary; count stitches after the 4th row only.
Weldon’s eyelet method made eyelets so small, I went up 2 needle sizes from my usual U.S. #2 to #4 (from 2.75mm to 3.5mm) to be assured of getting visible eyelets. This pattern also stretches vertically more than horizontally when blocking.
I’ve included a yarn-over version in the instructions, if a bigger eyelet is preferred.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, PSSO, knit, pick up yarn between stitches and bind off in knit stitch. Optional: yarn over
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
50 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 crochet cotton thread will make 10 inches of a 28-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
