I’m very excited to present an afghan pattern I haven’t seen anywhere but in Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 8, p.6, ca. 1895. I’ve altered a few things including changing garter stitch edges to background stitches. Victorian needleworkers probably improvised, so we can, too! I recommend purists refer to Weldon’s original instructions; they’re easy to follow.
The triangle starts at the bobble corner and has 65 rows. There are 4 bobbles and multiple “bells” (other patterns call them “foxgloves”) in each triangle. Every row starts with “yarn over, knit 1”.
The 4-triangle block is 9 inches square at gauge. It took me about 3.5 hours to knit a triangle. When making a large project, you could alternate simpler knitted blocks with the Campbell squares if you’d like to save time.

Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, yarn over, slip, make bobble (see pattern notes), SK2P, p2tog, PSSO, cast on stitches in the middle of rows and bind off in knit stitch. The bobbles are optional, if you prefer.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance. What is important is to block all triangles to the same size.

40 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make about 1 triangle in the stated gauge. 160 yards are needed for 1 square.
