Weldon's Leaf and Briar Block
I love a counterpane block with a leaf! This square from ca. 1889 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 3, p.10 and p.14 is one of the easier blocks to work. Many of the rows are knit or purl across between the 2 selvage stitches. There are a lot of rows but almost the entire last half of the block is an 8-row repeat. I love a block with a quick and easy finish!
The leaf is quite puffy on a garter stitch background. If you prefer a less puffy leaf, work a reverse stockinette stitch background for the leaf instead. The block is 4.75” square at gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, SSK, k3tog, p2tog and pass slipped stitch over (PSSO).
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
33 yards of #10 crochet thread will make 1 Leaf and Briar square in the stated gauge.
