Weldon’s Wicker Square makes me think of picnic baskets! This square is in Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 6, p.8. The Sidney and New South Wales Advertiser republished Weldon’s pattern on Saturday, 12 March 1892. The Advertiser wrote that many squares sewn together makes for an “effective, warm and durable” quilt. This handsome square has very simple sections that are quick to knit and it’s almost identical on both sides. The best way to tell front from back is to check the stockinette stitches around the eyelet row.
The sample is 4.75 inches square when worked to gauge and blocked. One square took just under 2 hours to knit.

Skills needed are: cast-on, slip purl-wise, knit, purl, yarn over, k2tog and k3tog.

Gauge is not important. What IS important is to block all squares to the same size.
Any block-able thread/yarn will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.
Bigger yarn and needles will make a project work up faster.
