Windblown Wheat
I converted a pattern from 1902 Butterick’s Fancy and Practical Knitting, pp.35-36 from an edging to a strip for use as a scarf or afghan strip, etc. The stitch count per row will vary from 39 to 42 stitches. Windblown Wheat has a 24-row repeat. All the wrong side rows are purl across except for the edge stitches. For a wider strip, cast on 9 stitches for each extra panel of Windblown Wheat.
Just FYI: the wheat doesn’t look windblown until near the end of the 24-row repeat.
It had me worried for awhile!
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, YO, YO twice, k2tog, SSK, p2tog and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Almost any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
63 yards of Aunt Lydia’s #10 crochet cotton thread will make 10 inches of a 39-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
