Welcome to the second issue of The Journal of Scottish Yarns, Autumn / Winter 2022.
In this issue you’ll find 10 patterns for 4 jumpers (2 knitted and 2 crocheted), 2 knitted shawls, a beanie hat and a crocheted pair of slipper socks, as well as a Highland Cow knitted toy and an embroidery sampler based on Mandy Tait’s patterned sheep illustrations.
The designers for issue 2 were inspired by autumn leaves, seen in the glorious colours and textured stitches they’ve chosen in the Scottish yarns used.
The features this time look at the history of tartan in this 200th anniversary of it’s ‘modern invention’, and an interpretation from the other side of the world, New Zealand, in ‘Woven Identities: Tartan meets Koru’.
The stories of several Scottish textiles people and places are also included: Di Gilpin, Black Isle Yarns, The Silly Sheep Fibre Company (in a journey from the Outer Hebrides to Shetland via a few breeds of sheep!), hand-spinner Jennie Howes and how the now King Charles III has been working to promote textile skills via his Princes Trust, based in Dumfries and Galloway.
