It has become a tradition for me to design a Mandala to use as a CAL between Christmas and New Year (Twixmas).
Crochet: Cowl
This cowl is worked flat in a gentle ripple pattern. The basic pattern uses 2 contrasting colours and is joined with a raised slip stitch finish providing a focus to the join. The gold coloured sample is is the basic pattern, using Willow Knits Silk Worsted, and the finished size is 60cm (24”) around by 17.5cm (7”) deep.

This shawl started as a simple test of this lovely kidsilk blend yarn and then just grew. It is a granny style shawl but using larger stitches which makes it more airy and works up that little bit quicker. A simple and easy border adds the final flourish.

The Mobberley Cowl was designed for the first Cheshire Fibre Festival and is named after a local village. It uses just one ball (100g/164m) of aran weight yarn. The finished cowl is approx. 120cm around by 15cm deep.

This lap blanket is made from little pixie squares that are quick to hook. I found them very addictive. I made a blanket using specific yarn, but it is absolutely perfect as a stash blanket – just use up any odds and ends of yarn as each little square only take a few metres.

I like it because I chose to ensure it was a perfect triangular fit with the correct mathematical split of stitches down each side (ok, a bit geeky and you don’t really need to know this!).

This is my tenth scarf design of 2014, for October. It is in a filet style (but not true filet crochet) which has 2 hearts worked through it - one mesh and one full. The scarf starts at the centre and half is worked first, then the yarn re-joined to the centre and the second half worked. The ends are shaped along the edge of each scarf.

July follows the theme of the June Scarf, which was based on granny circles joined as one long piece, and it inspired me to try granny squares joined as well. I choose a silk yarn, for drape and because it is cool which is good for summer in the UK. The colours are also cool blues. I used 2 colours but you could use 4 if you like.

I love the colour of this yarn. It is a perfect match for the colours in my lounge. So I designed a motif with which to make a cushion cover, so it could adorn the sofa. Imagine snuggling on the sofa with this cushion….pure bliss!

For February I designed a stash busting scarf. I found a fair amount of aran weight yarn in my stash and decided the best use would be a motif. So I designed a square in 2 colours, one for the first 2 rounds which forms a flower shape and a second for the last 2 rounds which square it off.

I love decorating my home with snowflakes and stars at Christmas, they look beautifully crisp. I use them in garlands around the tree, over the dresser, along the staircase – absolutely anywhere I can hang them! And I use individual hanging ones as simple decorations.

These coasters and mandala were originally designed for a workshop. I wanted to teach some specific techniques and as a result I ended up with 3 circle coasters, one square coaster and a mandala. The techniques include my favourite little diamond pattern (I am obsessed with it!) and slip stitch surface crochet.

I am a huge fan of kidsilk yarn, so I was overjoyed when the new Kidsilk Haze Glamour yarn was produced. The addition of sequins makes this something really special. A lovely big huggable shawl. I made the sample in Rowan Cocoon and it is so snug, great for keeping the chill off on cold winter nights or outdoors on spring evenings. It is named after the colour of the yarn – Bilberry; the eyelets made me think of the berries and it all fell into place.
