Knitting: Cowl
An ideal project for leftovers, this cowl features abstract patterns of flowers and branches paired with simple stripes. Knit in the round in a combination of stranded colorwork and stripes, the ends are grafted together for a seamless finish with no exposed floats.
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
Color blocking and metallic edges add a fun twist to these cozy colorwork mitts.

Laura Lam’s novel Goldilocks is a high-powered, high-concept feminist dystopian thriller about an all-female space crew on a mission to save humanity. I created these colorwork mitts as a tribute to the beautiful cover art, with space-themed motifs in six colors reminiscent of a dramatic sunset below a starry sky.

Around the corner from La Bien Aimée in Paris is a street called Rue du Tage, named for the Tagus river running through Spain and Portugal. A few blocks away from the mouth of the Tagus in Lisbon sits Retrosaria Rosa Pomar. The yarn that sparked this design, La Bien Aimée Mondim, is made by Rosa Pomar from Portuguese wool, then dyed in Paris at...

Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
Foldover tops mean these cozy cabled mitts can be worn either folded over or long when your fingers need some extra warmth – perfect for long walks on crisp autumn days or spring mornings when the chilly air lingers.
Knitting: Mittens
These Norwegian-style mittens feature traditional elements like a striped lace cuff and a thumb gusset on the palm side of the mitten, while the back of the hand features delicate wintry floral motifs.
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
The starting point for these mitts was the icy blue shade of Julie Asselin Nurtured, called Through The Looking Glass. Colorwork ideas in a muted wintry palette started to form in my head, though these mitts would look equally good in a brighter, higher contrast combination.

Chuckanut Drive is known to Washingtonians as a 20-mile stretch scenic coastal highway between Seattle and Bellingham. As a former Seattleite, I felt inspired by this scenic route when coming up with a design for Bellingham-based Spincycle Yarns’ super-bulky yarn Knit Fast, Die Young. Twisting cables in the blue-green colorway Blueprint felt li...
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
If working from the magazine version, please be sure to check the errata page before beginning this pattern, as there are sections missing from the magazine. This has been corrected in the Ravelry download version.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Named for the sea situated between Shetland and the Norwegian coast, this hat celebrates the shared heritage between the knitting traditions of Norway and Shetland. While the sample uses five different colors, the pattern never uses more than two colors in a round. The small amounts of each color needed make it a great stashbuster.
Knitting: Legwarmers, Thigh-high
The rustic simplicity of Snoqualmie Valley Yarn seemed like the perfect medium for a pair of high socks inspired by traditional folk stockings in Britain and Scandinavia. The yarn is warm, woolly, wears well, and it lends itself very well to the simple knit-purl texture. To make the pattern a bit more adaptable, I’ve included a legwarmer optio...
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Cliff Park is a tribute to the Pacific Northwest. This slouchy beanie features stripes and stranded colorwork that’ll keep your head cozy whether you’re commuting to work or camping for the weekend.
Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Moon Sprites is a bite-sized companion to the Moon Pulls pullover. Worked from the bottom up with a garter stitch brim, the pattern includes instructions for three different versions of this simple yet spirited hat. With only a few rounds of stranded colorwork, it’s ideal for colorwork beginners learning to tackle a new skill (and it also makes...
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
Color-shifting yarns and stranded colorwork are a match made in heaven! These mitts are a modern take on the traditional Norwegian mitten: the motifs on the back of the hand are reminiscent of a cluster of stars, while the beautiful color changes of Spincycle’s Dyed in the Wool add depth and color while using only two yarns. The contrasting cuf...
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
Pattern created for the 2014 Nordic Knitting Conference at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle, Washington. Pattern was distributed in student swag bags at conference check-in.
Knitting: Mid-calf Socks
Southern Fiords is the southern hemisphere counterpart to the more northerly Fjordland Hat (from Pom Pom Quarterly Issue 7).
Knitting: Pullover
Moon Pulls is a lopapeysa that fits like your favorite sweatshirt, with colorblocking in bold glacial blue and a little bit of stranded colorwork that recalls its more traditional counterpart. Soft cashmere-lined cuffs and collar turn up the cozy factor.
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
Acorn Teeth was originally published in 2012, but an updated version has been released as part of the Paper Tiger Fall/Winter 2013 collection!
Knitting: Tee
Amiina is a seamless cropped-length blouse worked from the bottom-up in the round. Shoulders are joined using a 3-needle bind off and then the sleeves are picked up and knit top-down in the round on DPNs. Three rounds of stranded colorwork at the waist add lacy detail to the vintage silhouette.
Knitting: Earwarmers
I picked up three little balls of Shetland Spindrift on a trip to Edinburgh, with the intent to use them together for a project. I thought I’d knit up an earwarmer for cooler weather – I wear my hair up often but it’s hard to wear a hat when my hair is pulled up. So here’s my solution! Even though this pattern uses three colors, you’ll never us...
