On a visit to the Hoxa Tapestry Gallery, in Orkney, I bought some cards. One being the ‘Echoes of Hamnavoe’, pictured below. Nighthawk was one of the few colours of yarn from Jamieson’s of Shetland that I hadn’t used yet. So, I experimented with other toning colours, ending up with this colourway.

Photographs from my trip to Gotland in August 2019 inspired me to design these mitts. The sea, beach stones, grasses, and lichen blended so nicely, I just knew I had to put a design together to remember beautiful Visby.

‘Hairst’ – Shetland dialect for Autumn. This closefitting, warm and comfortable. It is a popular souvenir from the Shetland Designer shop. All the traditional aspects are incorporated, some of my favourite Fair Isle patterns and the corrugated rib seen on traditional hand knitted garments.

Inspiration for this cushion was from the painting “Milkmaid” by Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer (1632 – 1675). I decided to use this particular motif to show the look of a Dutch tile reflecting the background of the artist.
