Bluegrass Hat is a two color brioche hat designed for color play and stashbusting. The textured brioche fabric creates depth while letting small bits of color shift across the surface.

It’s a great introduction to brioche and still a favorite for knitters who already love the technique.

Worked in fingering weight yarn with very small yardage requirements, it’s perfect for minis, leftovers, or combining colors you’ve been wanting to try together.

Design Details

The textured brioche fabric gives the hat a plush, dimensional surface while still feeling lightweight. Small color changes ripple across the fabric, so even tiny scraps become visible without looking busy.

You can finish it with a pom pom or leave it simple for a sleeker look. Alternating the foreground color every other round creates the shifting multicolored effect seen in our samples.

Pattern Highlights

  • Two color brioche keeps the knitting engaging
  • Ideal for minis and leftovers
  • Small yardage requirements
  • Quick, giftable knit
  • Includes video tutorials

Construction Overview

The hat is knit in the round from the brim up. A garter stitch brim is followed by the two color brioche body. The crown is shaped with simple decreases and closed at the top, ready for a pom pom if desired.

Yarn Notes

This hat is made for scraps and minis. We used a mix of small skeins and changed the foreground color frequently, but you can use as many or as few colors as you like.

High contrast colors make the brioche stitches easier to see while knitting. Tonals and speckles create a softer blended look.

Fingering weight yarns work best here. Wool or wool blends help the brioche stitches stay springy and defined.
