Ponderosa Hat is a classic cable knit hat, timeless, warm, and easy to knit. It takes inspiration from its sweater and sock siblings, bringing the same sculptural cables to a one skein DK project with a familiar, comfortable fit.

Designed for everyone from baby to adult, the ribbed brim can be folded for extra warmth or worn unfolded for a more relaxed look. The crown shaping keeps the cables flowing cleanly to the very end. Add a pom or let the texture stand on its own.

If you love this cable motif, you can also find it in the Ponderosa Sweater and Ponderosa Socks.

Design Details

Ponderosa Hat is all about those cables, it works up quickly and looks impressive every time.

The ribbed brim gives you options. Fold it up for extra warmth and a classic beanie look, or wear it unfolded for a more relaxed, slouchy feel, the cables sit beautifully either way. Finish it with a big fluffy pom for a playful touch, or let the texture speak for itself. Both are the right answer.

Pattern Highlights

  • Classic cable texture in a quick one skein project
  • Folded or unfolded brim for adjustable fit and warmth
  • Sizes from baby to adult
  • Written and charted cable instructions included

Construction Overview

The hat begins with a ribbed brim and is worked in the round. After the brim, the cable pattern is established and continues through the body of the hat.

Crown shaping is worked within the cable pattern so the cables flow smoothly into the top. The hat can be worn cuffed or slouchier depending on brim preference.

Yarn Notes

We especially love Mer-Yak DK by Sprigs & Stone for its smooth hand and tonal depth, which helps the cables show clearly.
