Sumi ink painting (or drawing) is an ancient East Asian art form that uses black ink and brushwork. My featured designer collection in Knitscene Fall 2016 was inspired by the tradition of Sumi ink drawings. These stark black and white drawings/paintings are fluid and full of expression. I can find endless inspiration for knitwear (or anything) within this art form, and I was far from finished with this inspiration source even after I completed my collection for Knitscene. (Indeed, I could probably do five more collections based on this theme!)

Farm yarns are my jam. My friend Hannah from Mindful Folk Farm lovingly raises her sheep to create small batch, botanically hand dyed yarns. This project was designed as a two-skein project to make the most of her gorgeous yarns. This unisex cowl is deep, featuring a simple stitch pattern to show off subtle color variations. A point at the bott...

I have been on a mission to make a sweater that wears like a sweatshirt for a while. This one fits the bill. It has just enough positive ease to be comfortably roomy and is simple with a bit of interest in the lace adorned yoke (which is sort of my sweet spot of knitwear design!). Add in a drapey and soft yarn and you’ve got a sweater that will...

YARN NOTE: The pattern is very adjustable to the yardage you have, as you may knit each section fewer or more times than the pattern states. A suggested minimum yardage for a good-sized shawl would be around 800 yds / 732 m. Likewise, if you’re using the yarn the pattern calls for, you can continue knitting each section until you run out of yar...

This sweater is named for one of my favorite fall vegetables: brassica oleracea v. sabellica, otherwise known as kale! In autumn I am either rounding up the last harvest in the garden, out eating apple cider doughnuts with my family, or catching the last bits of warmth before the snow flies. And, as the summer sun chills off, I need a sweater t...

One winter’s eve I found myself craving COLOR. Multiple times I filled up my cart with Jill Draper’s beautiful selections, and finally landed on these four colors together. The combination is both playful and romantic; deceptively simple and just the cure for those needing an infusion of color in their knitting.

Now available as an individual Ravelry download, this pattern was originally published in Making Stories Magazine, Issue 2. There is something about lace around my shoulders that I find immensely elegant. Combined with a circular yoke and top down construction, it’s also simple to knit and simple to wear.

When one of my dearest and oldest friends asked me to make her a sweater for her wedding I said “of course!” Together we chose a yarn and designed her wedding sweater. This sweater is a spin off of that one. It uses a lighter weight yarn held double – mohair for some luscious-ness! It also features a slimmer fit and button up front, cropped len...

This cowl is designed to be a canvas for playing with color. Sections of stripes and colorwork offer different ways to experiment and see how colors blend or bounce off one another. While the pattern uses 6 colors, there is no reason you can’t incorporate even more! Stay on course, knitting the colors as written, or veer off course and trust yo...

In Maine, spring is hard earned and hard won. Winters are long, and by the time green things start to poke up out of the ground it is worth REJOICING. Even the invasive wild mustard that comes up in my yard is a welcome sight. It is a delicious welcome to a season that will soon be filled with other green vegetables. This hat’s undulating stock...

Bulky lace is one of my favorite thing to knit. Bulky weight yarn somehow feels like a guilty pleasure, and knitting luxurious lace in it is even better! Bulky lace weight is dramatic, elegant, modern and COZY! This is a shawl to get through winter if ever there was one! The pattern is repetitive enough that the knitter can easily make the shaw...

Triangular top down shawls are one of my favorites for the beautiful and simple symmetry. This one is a fun way to play with color without the stranded colorwork. Use different tones of the same color or mix and match for endless color combinations.

Eda was my very first independent knitting pattern. Over time, I’ve learned a lot about how to not only craft a knitting pattern that is comfortable to follow, but also how to add small things that create a great aesthetic. There was so much I loved about that original Eda Shawl, that I knew I wanted an updated version of it with some small cha...

Oh, a classic cabled cardigan! It never goes out of style and it can be worn with nearly everything! The original Porter Cardigan was published in October 2015. Yoked sweaters are pretty much my favorite thing to knit. When I came across Spincycle’s amazing yarns, I knew I had to design something with them! They are incredibly fun to knit with. You won’t want to put your knitting down before you get to the next color.

This shawl is named for the gorgeous yarn it’s knit from. It’s no secret that I love farm yarns with a lot of heart. Mindful Folk Farm Yarn is just that. My beloved Tensho Pullover is a favorite… and so I thought it ought to become a hat as well! For those of you hoping to knit the colorwork, but not wanting to commit to a sweater, this is the project for you! For rows that have floats of 5 or more stitches, consider trapping your floats.

Recently I moved to a new house. We moved from our house in the city where we’d lived for nearly a decade, to a house in the country. While a welcome change, it’s come with a lot of chaos and stress. Dog Tooth Lily is named for the genus of flowers that blooms first here in Maine. Never thinking myself a bright yellow type of person, I can’t get enough of that color come March. Softness around one’s neck is a way to luxuriate no matter what you are doing throughout the day. Sometimes it’s a big squishy wrap, and others it’s a light little layer like this one. It’s perfect for when winter is transitioning into spring or summer into fall. When you need just a little something around your neck.

Cables nestled in the luscious texture of this hat plus just the right amount of slouch, means you won’t take this hat off your head until summer. Stone Wool Cormo seems meant for cable knitting and is both soft and durable. This hat has scarcely left my head since knitting it!

The Bonnie Banks Wrap uses a similar eyelet motif to my Bonnie Banks Shawl. When packing for a wedding recently, I realized I did not have a single shawl to wear to such an occasion. Shawls I have in plenty. But the shawls I wear are wooly, everyday shawls. Knitting - a simple act - continues to amaze me. There have been times that the yarn and needles running through my hands are so deeply embedded in my memory that I can remember the very stitches I made, one at a time. This yarn was sitting left over from another design, calling to me like a siren. I love Icelandic wool and this yarn in particular exemplifies the magical qualities about it I love so much. This cowl was inspired by the wake a boat leaves in the water as it glides through the bay checking lobster traps. The reversible cables are ribbed, and on one side look like standard cables.
