I purchased a skein of A Verb for Keeping Warm’s gorgeous 2024 anniversary color for its resemblance to gorgeous ears of heirloom corn, and designed a cowl to showcase it. Find bundles for this cowl here!

In this sweater, I wanted to focus on the linear elements that make me buzz with joy when I see the prairie, the way the rows of corn and grain line up and radiate away as you drive by. These rows of grain, geometric and organic at the same time, always make me feel like the center of some cosmic plan.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
This shawl is worked modularly, with the blocks building on each other as in a log cabin quilt. Block are worked alternately on the wearer’s left and the wearer’s right, and they cycle through lace, garter stitch, and stockinette.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
Knitting is math you can hold in your hands, and this shawl is taking that idea to the big leagues while still keeping it easy to knit and wear. Based on a formula where each triangle is twice the area of the previous one, Recursive is nerdy, knitterly, and beautiful.

Winter Petrichor: n. The smell of new snow on bare earth, on a bright, clear, cold winter night.

One color palette that has always fascinated me is patinas and rust. I never love metals when they’re shiny and new; rather, I prefer them a few years (or decades) down the road, when they’ve lived a little bit and developed depth and complexity—sometimes in tones startlingly different than the metal itself. My favorite of these is the patina t...

After the body pattern is established in the center of the triangle, the rest of the increases are integrated into Double Seed Stitch.

As a child, I always loved the myth of the little mermaid. Of course, I loved the Disney version, but what really called to me were the murky, complex depths of the original story. I wanted to design a piece that spoke to this, with twisting, arrhythmic, sinuous cables and subtle lace like the seaweed and bracken that twines and swirls along th...

First, epaulets are worked separate for each shoulder, and then stitches are picked up along one edge, cast on, and picked up along the edge of the other epaulet. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of British literature and period dramas. One of my absolute favorites in Elizabeth Gaskell’s North & South, a novel of class struggle and romance set in the town of Milton in Northern England. It’s also a novel of binaries: the titular north and south, rich and poor, masculine and feminine, softness and st...

Wear it fully buttoned for a close,...

The shape of the lace pattern in this triangular shawl reminded us of a row of old-fashioned kites. This is an intricate lace pattern, but not a traditional one! Worked in our fingering weight merino, this design uses clever drop stitch construction in an unexpected way.

Sometimes a simple chevron pattern can become something fresh and new when viewed through a different lens. This cowl was born of a idle “what if?” moment. One of my favorite movies of the 1920s is the silent film Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang. A feast of Art Deco imagery set in a futuristic dystopia of warring classes, it is one of the most imaginative and inspiring movies of the era. The strong, clear lines of its design and cinematography and the unworldly beauty of the automaton at the ce...

The inspiration for this shawl came about when the weather here in Maine was teetering on the edge between winter and spring. Knitting: Beanie, Toque
Throughout my life, I’ve only loved a few hats. Sure, I’ve knitted lots, worn more, and enjoyed all of them, but there are just a few that get my true affection. Hats for snow days, hats for walks on cold fall nights, hats for some truly awful hair days: the hat you grab no matter the occasion. I haven’t had one to love for a while now, and thi...
