Named after MacMahan Island, in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, this collection of three cowls was inspired by the island’s rugged coastline, with its rocky ledges, powerful tides, and ubiquitous clumps of seaweed.

Knitting: Pullover
Barley, an A-line pullover with a wide neck and slightly belled sleeves, is worked in the round from the top down, and is accented by cables that run down both sides of front and back, as well as the outsides of the sleeves. On the “right” side, the cables appear as narrow double cables that meld with the smooth stockinette background, while on...

Inspired by the Chinese Year of the Tiger, this cardigan features wide bands of mosaic-knit tiger stripes around the hem and cuffs. It is worked in the round as a pullover, and then steeked to create the front opening edges.

Calluna was created to showcase the myriad colors of variegated yarns; its slipped stitch patterns shift and layer the different colors, softening and blending areas of pooling, and creating new juxtapositions of hues.

While I created this design in honor of the Chinese zodiac Year of the Ox (or bull), it would also be suitable for your favorite Taurus (just omit the Chinese character stranded pattern, as in the dark-background, baby-sized sample pictured). Lightly variegated yarns add interest to the stranded motif.
Knitting: Fingerless Gloves
Keep your hands and forearms warm, while leaving your fingertips free to work, or play! A scalloped and textured lace panel flows along the dorsum of these fitted gauntlets, then segues into a shapely mix of lace, garter stitch and ribbing on the back of the hand.

The Cableweave Hat, accented with an intricately woven cable on one side, works up quickly in a bulky weight yarn. Rapid decreases create a gathered effect at the crown. When wearing the hat, try varying the cable placement to see where it looks best on you! (Note that one side of the hat is plain stockinette, as shown in two of the photos; the...

Decreases and increases create the meandering runnels of the Salt Creek Hat. Named after a popular traditional fiddle tune, this hat works up quickly in a bulky weight yarn.

I created this design in honor of the Chinese Year of the Rooster (and my last name, Hahn, is German for rooster, so I have a special fondness for roosters!). “Galletto” is Italian for young rooster or cockerel, and “fare il galletto” (“act like a young rooster”) colloquially means “to show off.” This pullover shows off several techniques for k...

The Body of this cardigan, including the button and buttonhole bands, is worked in one piece from the bottom up to the armholes. The 3/4-length Sleeves are worked in the round from the bottom up to the armholes. Then the Body and Sleeves are joined to work the seamless Yoke back and forth with raglan shaping.

Unusual plaited cables add interest to this raglan cardigan, edging the fronts and running up the sleeves to the top of the shaped hood. The reverse side of the cables is also attractive, and is displayed when the hood is worn down, at the transition from fronts to hood.

This cropped pullover, with a wide shallow neck and ¾ length sleeves, ends just below the waist, making it perfect for layering over another top—or it can be easily lengthened to the top or middle of the hip, for a more classic look. A wide cabled panel accents the front.

While I created this design in honor of the Chinese zodiac Year of the Monkey, you may also recognize the “barrel of monkeys” silhouette in the stranded border. Lightly variegated yarns add interest to the stranded motif. You could certainly choose to use the bright primary colors of the monkeys that come in the barrel, but I like the shadowy v...

The Lariana Cabled Pullover is a modern take on the Aran sweater, at home in the mountains, the city or on the shore, with set-in sleeves and streamlined stockinette side panels with diagonal accents. Three different lengths customize the fit: hip length (as shown), cropped and tunic length.

The boldly colored floral yoke is the focal point of this tank. In traditional Fair Isle fashion, only two colors are worked on each round, although a total of four different colors are used. Optional duplicate stitching (see photos of front of garment) is used to accent the center of each flower. After the yoke is completed, stitches are picke...

I created this design in honor of the Chinese zodiac Year of the Ram/Sheep/Goat, but it is also perfect for your favorite Aries or Capricorn! The stranded border is a repeat of a ram’s head motif. Shown as a slouchy beanie, all sizes except the smallest can also be worked with a shorter crown for a more fitted look. This hat is worked in the ro...

This generously sized wrap sets a wide lace panel alongside simple stockinette. Increases and decreases sculpt the edge of the stockinette panel, allowing it to echo the natural curves of the lace. I created this design in honor of the Chinese Year of the Snake. The Chinese zodiac is a 12 year cycle, with a different animal for each year; in addition, each year is also associated with one of five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal or water). 2013 is the year of the Water Snake; water snakes belong to the genus Nerodia.
Knitting: Hot Water Bottle
The Flame Wave stitch pattern adds texture and visual warmth to a simple hot water bottle cover, while maintaining a single layer of fabric (unlike knitted covers adorned with cables), allowing heat to radiate evenly. Directions for Flame Wave pattern are given in chart form.

I created this pattern in honor of the Chinese Year of the Rabbit; many of the nicest people I know are Rabbits (born in a Rabbit year, that is)! As this dress took form, its violet color and the waterfall effect of the lace border brought the cascading blossoms of Wisteria sinensis to mind. And since W. sinensis means Chinese wisteria, and the lace border is a variation of “Chinese Lace” from Barbara Walker’s 2nd Treasury of Knitting Patterns—well, the name seemed perfect.
