Five Colorwork Shawls is a knit/lab eBook containing five patterns originally published as mystery knit-alongs between 2014 and early 2017.

Appenzeller Lace is an open, lacy, decorative scarf or shawl with swoops of color and dramatic contrasts in density.

Curvy intarsia inspired by stylized pomegranates, symbols of fertility, fruitfulness and abundance in Mediterranean textiles. The rounded shapes are created by increasing and decreasing within a chevron pattern.

A painterly pattern of curved lines and shapes created by the interplay of colors in stranded intarsia knitting. Five overlapping background colors create the curvilinear forms, and the spaces between are filled with stranded motifs in contrast colors.

A large rectangular shawl inspired by colorful Indian textiles. The coloring was inspired by the Indian Festival of Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, as people celebrate by throwing colored powder at each other!

A lightweight lace shawl inspired by the folded layers of color in Rainbow Jasper stone: “During formation patterns arise in sediment or volcanic ash; the original materials are often fractured or distorted, and filled in with other colorful minerals” (from Wikipedia). 


A textured stitch pattern with ribbing and drop stitch bubbles, ideal for warm scarves, wraps, shawls, afghans, blankets or throws. The base of ribbing adds a deep three dimensional structure to the fabric, with strong shadows and highlights. The sample scarf was left unblocked to preserve the texture.

An easy-to-knit lightweight scarf or shawl with drop stitch mesh rippling between garter stitch ridges. The transparent waves are inspired by sunlight sparkling on shallow water, and the constantly evolving color changes in the Schoppel Wolle yarn provide plenty of visual interest.

Fresco Stole is a large cosy wrap with bands of flowers sparkling in a filigree of lace stitches.

Jaali Crescent is a multicolored crescent inspired by the light, shade & transparency of Islamic architecture.

A deliciously squishy comforting scarf, wrap, or shawl pattern using scraps of different colors.

A textured interpretation of Shetland Ruffles, in which the colored stripes are replaced by shadows and highlights. The curved ridges and shadows are created by alternating bands of stocking stitch with bands of reverse stocking stitch while working a lace pattern.

A swirling brioche pattern with echoes of Jugendstil, the German counterpart of Art Nouveau. Jugendstil combines geometric elements with sinuous curves inspired by flowers and plants. Please note that the pattern assumes you are familiar with the brioche knitting technique!

An experimental pattern with waves of dropped stitches designed for colorful variegated yarns.

A dramatic beaded shawl in red and gold. The shape is a shallow crescent knit top down, starting from a single stitch. The finished version of this pattern is a synthesis of the three projects - it has the radiating beaded upper section, the shallow diamond border, and an additional row of eyelets between the diamonds and the outer border.

This shawl was inspired by the range of natural shades of Jamieson & Smith‘s Shetland Supreme 2 Ply Lace yarn.

This is a top down triangle inspired by a combination of materials - the soft blue yarn and the little gold beads reminded me of the clothing imagined by Fra Angelico, Duccio and others in their Annunciations and Nativities - an accumulation of tiny gold paint dots on luminously coloured surfaces.

A small shawl inspired by Eastern European folk costumes, and intended to be slung asymmetrically around the shoulders. The pattern combines stranded and lace knitting techniques. The stranding is done back and forth and is worked quite loosely to create a more open texture than normal.

This design was specially created for the HELPSudan project. The aim is for the pencil cases to be sold to benefit HELPSudan financially as well as to be given to Sudanese school children.

I’ve used simple color combinations in the samples to illustrate the designs as clearly as possible. You can transform the designs with variegated or heathered yarns and/or more subtle or dramatic colors.

Techniques include stranded knitting, increasing and decreasing. The repeat is 81 stitches across by 64 down.
