Knitting: Scarf
The multi-coloured yarn in this scarf is a beautiful handspun yarn sent to me by Worldweaver as part of my ongoing adventure in designing with handspun yarns. I had enough yarn for a scarf, and decided to work stripes of eyelet mesh and garter stitch. The mesh is also worked on a garter stitch background, which makes the scarf reversible. I wor...

This design was inspired by the topography of the Niagara Escarpment. The layers of stitch patterns represent the sedimentary rock of the escarpment, while the motifs of the lace stitch patterns represent the fossils found within the rock. You can play around and have fun with the order of the stripes (see Notes). Originally knit in a DK weight...

Knitting: Cowl
The multi-coloured yarn in this cowl is a beautiful handspun yarn sent to me by Worldweaver as part of an ongoing adventure in designing with handspun yarns. I paired it with a commercial yarn in a deep navy, a colour that is a great complement to the many marls in this fractal spin. Colour takes centre stage in this simple design, with stockin...

Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
This beautiful yarn was sent to me as part of an ongoing adventure in designing for, and knitting with, handspun yarn. The organic Polwarth fibre was dyed by Inglenook Fibers , then spun and plied by Worldweaver into a gradient set of seven sport-weight skeins, each measuring approximately 143 metres and weighing approximately 40 grams (155 yds...
Knitting: Scarf
This beautiful yarn was generously gifted to me as part of an ongoing adventure in designing for, and knitting with handspun yarn. The Targhee fibre was dyed by Greenwood Fiberworks in a beautiful turquoise colourway, then spun and plied by UUeweKathryn into a worsted weight gradient set of three colours. There was approximately half as much of...

Knitting: Scarf
This scarf was knit with yarn spun by unclerob and sent to me as part of an ongoing adventure to design for, and knit with, handspun yarn. The merino and silk fibre was spun and plied to a DK weight, and the silk gives the yarn heathered highlights with a lovely sheen. The spinner loves scarves, and is a little obsessed with reversible fabrics,...

Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
The yarn for this project was sent to me as part of an ongoing adventure in designing for handspun yarn. This blend of Merino and Bluefaced Leicester was spun fairly early in unclerob’s spinning career, and it’s a little “lumpy-bumpy,” thick and thin. This kind of yarn can be absolutely lovely knit up in garter stitch, where the texture of the ...

The creatively dyed Desert Carefree yarn from Dyelicious Yarn starts off dark, quickly transitions to light, then slowly transitions back to dark. The unique dye method creates a colourway that is different from anything I have ever worked with before, so I wanted to design something unlike anything I had ever made before.

Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
This shawl was knit with yarn sent to me as part of a challenge to design with handspun wool. The yarn was spun by UUeweKathryn from the fleece of Lacaune sheep, and, undyed, it is a beautiful soft white. The wool is toothy, but not particularly scratchy, and I very much enjoyed knitting with it. I have used a lace motif that I know is a favour...

This scarf was knit with yarn sent to me as part of a challenge to have me design with handspun yarns. judycollette dyed the Polwarth fibre in the braid, spun it with a short forward draw, then plied it into a wonderfully bouncy, tonal yarn. Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
This design was inspired by the beautiful, watery “Soft Rains of April” colourway from KEENAN HAND DYED YARN, and a request for a pattern that would not be too intimidating for first-time lace knitters. The first half of this vortex-shaped (or boomerang) shawl is knit in garter ridges—no lace at all! The ripple stitch pattern continues with gar...

Knitting: Scarf, Shawl / Wrap
This design was inspired by the “Barrel Aged” colourway from ÁLAINN YARNS, and is meant to evoke the patterns on the lead crystal or cut-glass tumblers in which barrel aged whisky would be served. Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
This shawl was inspired by the two “Cardinal” colourways in the Love Birds collection from SONGBIRD YARN AND FIBRES. The shawl is shaped like a wing; the two simple chevron stitch motifs resemble feathers, and the points on the scalloped edge of the shawl are evocative of the cardinals’ crests.

Knitting: Scarf
Diagonal lines in two directions tumble through three horizontal widths of stripes to create a scarf with both visual and textural interest. While the sample was knit with a DK weight wool and acrylic blend, the simple pattern would adapt well to either lighter or heavier yarns, and to different fibres. A smooth, round yarn will give better sti...

Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
I live in a small town on the southern shore of Georgian Bay, and returning home after some time away is wondrous. You come over a hill on the escarpment, and suddenly there’s the bay in front of you, stretching out to the horizon. Georgian Bay’s moods are mercurial: calm and placid one day with barely a ripple on its glassy, blue surface; roug...
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
I added rows to a classic “Crest of the Wave” stitch pattern so that each of the colour blocks is practically square in this “Colour-Blocked Waves” wrap .
Knitting: Scarf
This blue scarf is knit in hurdle stitch, an easy stitch for beginners. It is a practical stitch for a scarf because the texture of knit and purl stitches traps air and helps provide insulation against cold winter breezes.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
The stitch pattern is called “Little Leaf Stripe” and the three colours tumble through two widths of stripes, so I call this design “Tumbling Leaves.”
Knitting: Baby Blanket
This is a warm blanket that can be draped over an adult’s lap or used in a baby’s crib.
Knitting: Baby Blanket
This blanket is large enough to be used in a baby’s crib, or as a lap afghan for an adult. It can easily be made wider by adding stitches, in multiples of 6, or longer by knitting more repeats of the 34-row lace and garter stitch stripe pattern. Cast on fewer stitches and knit fewer stripes for a smaller blanket.
Knitting: Scarf
The soft yarn and supple rib pattern ensure that this scarf will be comfortable snuggled tightly around your neck.
Knitting: Shawl / Wrap
The colours of this shawl and the shapes in the lace are meant to evoke the pieces of worn glass that you can find on the beach. Throw it over your shoulders on a cool summer evening, or wrap it around your neck like a scarf on a cold winter day to remind yourself of summer.

Knitting: Scarf
The colourwork here looks quite complicated, but it’s easier than it seems. There’s no stranding; you just work each row in one of three colours in sequence. The staggered stripes are created because of the way yarns loop around each other in knit and purl stitches. A beginning knitter can make this scarf with little difficulty--if you can cast...

Knitting: Scarf
This cable scarf uses traditional cable patterns, but does not look entirely traditional because it is not conventionally symmetrical. The three cables get progressively wider across the scarf, rather than having identical narrow cables flanking a more complex and wider central motif. The idea behind the design plays with our perception of symm...
